Opening and Award Ceremony: Fri, 27. 11. 2026, 7 pm
Kerstin Brätsch (born 1979 in Hamburg, lives and works in Berlin) transforms the Lippold Gallery into a living organism. Materiality, color, surface, and space intertwine, dissolving the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture.
A key element of the exhibition is the floor itself. Drawing on a mosaic project she previously realized, the artist has designed a vinyl floor for Marta that covers all 350 square meters of gallery space on the museum’s first floor. Here, large-scale paintings created specifically for the exhibition encounter sculptural elements made from printed cardboard, alongside a video work. The various media and techniques merge into an immersive environment in which painting is not not just something to look at, but something to experience. It becomes a living, dynamic presence that engages the senses and blurs the boundaries between image, space, and perception.
The Marta Award carries a prize of €25,000 and includes, among other things, the acquisition of a work for the Collection Marta. The award, in its new format is presented every two years. The recipient is selected by an independent expert jury, to recognize distinctive artistic positions and support the expansion of the museum’s collection.
A catalogue with texts by Philipp Bollmann, Kathleen Rahn, and Kirsty Bell is being published to accompany the exhibition. The publication features over 40 works across approximately 200 pages. Concept: Kerstin Brätsch and Dan Solbach; graphic design: Dan Solbach. In German and English.
