The architect Liza Heilmeyer will speak on this topic in her keynote speech at the Marta:
Building in general, but public building in particular, is the cultural expression of our society, a reflection of our values. How do we want to work, learn and research together? What space do we give to encounter and assembly? How can inclusion succeed? How do we build in a way that conserves resources and is suitable for future generations? What role does design play in this? The public sector wavers between the pioneering role it should take and strict cost specifications, sometimes complicated decision-making and awarding processes, and overall scarce resources. A challenge for everyone involved. Is everyone still willing to accept this?
Liza Heilmeyer (*1975 in Freiburg im Breisgau) completed a one-year course at the Freie Kunstschule Stuttgart and then studied architecture at the University of Stuttgart, where she graduated in 2003. After graduating, she worked at Foster+Partners in London. Liza Heilmeyer and Stephan Birk then founded their own office, Birk und Heilmeyer, in Stuttgart in 2005, which was renamed Birk Heilmeyer und Frenzel Architekten in 2012 together with Martin Frenzel.
Her work has received several awards, including the Deubau Prize for Young Architects, the Advancement Award from the Architekturgalerie am Weißenhof, the North Rhine-Westphalia Advancement Award for Young Artists, and the “Europe 40 under 40 – Europe’s emerging young architects and designers” award. From 2008 to 2010 she worked as an academic assistant at the Institute for Structural Design (Chair 2). In 2009 she was appointed to the Association of German Architects (BDA). In 2010 and 2012 she was a member of the Convent of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture. In October 2020, she was elected as the new State Chairwoman of the BDA Baden-Württemberg.
